Consider their personal qualities, like honesty and responsibility. Do they have good judgment and the ability to make sound decisions even under stress? Moreover, it’s important they are comfortable communicating with beneficiaries and navigating legal processes.
I often advise clients to discuss this role openly with potential candidates beforehand. This allows everyone to understand the responsibilities involved and ensures the chosen individual is willing and able to take on the task.
Notwithstanding the best intentions, I’ve encountered situations where executors were overwhelmed or lacked the necessary skills.
